Obituary

STAMFORD – Agnes "Nita" Schleicher, 100, passed away Monday, May 16, 2011 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

Nita was born January 28, 1911 the daughter of Beltran Arundel and Agnes (Parker) Rawstron, in Vancouver British Columbia, and then settled in Springfield, Mass.

She graduated from Framingham State College, Massachusetts and the New York University Columbia Teachers College, where she received her MA degree.

She married John Andrew Schleicher in 1943.

Nita taught Home Economics for 27 ½ years, retiring in 1977 as a Home Economics Teacher from the Mt. Vernon and New Rochelle Public Schools.

Living in the communities of Mt. Vernon, North White Plains and East Meredith, Nita was very active with many different civic and school organizations and committees, as well as being an active and devoted member of the United Methodist Church.

Nita was blessed to have been able to travel extensively. She enjoyed many hobbies especially gardening and crafts.

She is survived by three children and spouses, Gordon and Marjorie Schleicher of Mason, MI, Andrea Schleicher of East Meredith and Helen and James Varco of Harpersfield; 5 grandchildren, Paul Nardone of Maui, Hawaii, Noel Celentano of Cortlandt Manor, Wendy Beehner of Stamford, Marcia Switzer of Hanover Park, IL, and Andrew Schleicher of Nashville, TN; 8 great grandchildren; a brother, Merrick Rawstron of Falmouth, MA; several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, John; a brother, Arundel Rawstron and a sister, Helen Rawstron.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Teressa Sivers, pastor, officiating.

The interment will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
