Obituary

Written by Mark Hanok

My father, Albert Hanok, was a great man in so many ways. I couldn't have asked for a better Dad, a wonderful, very knowledgeable, very generous man who always cared more about others than about himself. Al was very much liked by everyone who knew him. He was born on the lower East Side of Manhattan way back in December 1917. On New Year's Day 1942, Al married his very loving wife, Charlotte. They were married for 69 years, and no couple could have been more devoted to each other or cared more for each other. They were inseparable. During the Second World War, Al served in India for two years.

Al was a clinical chemist for over 40 years, beginning his career in the late 1940's at Brooklyn Jewish hospital. Then he set up the clinical chemistry lab at Jacoby hospital in the Bronx during the 1950's and 1960's, and was Director of Clinical Chemistry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1968 through 1971. Al went on to direct the clinical chemistry laboratory at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, and worked there until his retirement in 1985. Al was an avid photographer who took extraordinary photographs from around the country, and he won numerous awards.

I'm very thankful for all the great times during these many years with Al, including the vacations out West and all the great rides around New York and New England from the late 1960's all the way up until four years ago. Thanks, Dad for all you've done and for your unconditional love. We miss you very much.

Services were held Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.
