Obituary

ONEONTA - Albert W. Hanzalik, 88, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Carolina House in Bluffton, SC. He was loved for his wit and charm, and he will be missed by many.

He was born September 26, 1921, in Binghamton, the son of Stephen and Eva (Kuahadich) Hanzalik.


He married Laura Meyers on May 29, 1939 in Oneonta.


Mr. Hanzalik was a United States Army Paratrooper with the 101st Airbourne serving during World War II where he earned numerous awards including the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operation. He then went on to serve with the Oneonta National Guard and the United States Army Reserve, retiring after 27 years of service.


Mr. Hanzalik worked for the D & H Railroad, Oneonta, retiring after 44 years.


He was a lifetime member of United Transportation Union and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Oneonta.


He is survived by his sons, Albert Jr. (Barbara) Bluffton SC; Thomas, Burlington, NJ; daughter-in-law, Joanne Hanzalik; grandchildren, Michael (Barbara), Joseph, Matthew (Tamara), Scott (Helena), Katherine, Thomas; sister, Mary Rusnak, Binghamton; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.


He was predeceased by his parents; spouse, Laura; sons, Ronald and Steven; 4 brothers and 1 sister.


Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Friday, September 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, as celebrant.


Interment will follow at the Greater Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with Military Honors.


In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.


The family would like to thank the staff of Carolina House and Tidewater Hospice for their great kindness and thoughtful care throughout his final days.
