ONEONTA – Alexander Wislous, 87, passed away at home on Good Friday, April 22, 2011.
He was born October 28, 1923 in Watervliet, the son of Frank and Anna (Haitko) Wislous.
After moving to Oneonta as a child, he grew up and continued to live his adult life in the
"Lower Deck".
Alex (Zonk) graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1941.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. He was a Field Lineman 641.
Alex married his wife of 61 years, Anna Fusco on September 12, 1949 in Shelton, Conn.
Alex was employed by the D&H Railroad in Oneonta for 42 years as a Car Inspector, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Wislous of Oneonta; a daughter, Arlene and husband, Bob Speranzi of West Oneonta; a son, Victor and wife, Tere Wislous of Albany; two granddaughters, Catie and Mandy; a brother, William Wislous of New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Helen Schultz.
Grandpa will be mostly remembered for his sense of humor, his willingness to lose at checkers, and his fishing and gardening skills. He also enjoyed golfing and swimming.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Bernard Ampong, as celebrant.
Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
