SCHENEVUS - Alma A. Szeliga passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, December 31, 2010 surrounded by her loving family after a 6 month battle with ovarian cancer.
Alma was born at home on July 30, 1935 in Westford, NY to Edward and Silva (Perry) Skellie.
She graduated from A.S. Draper School and then from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1958. She went on to teach kindergarten for 5 years in Richfield Springs, Marcellus and Hamilton, NY.
On July 6, 1963 she married Alex and moved to Wallington, NJ. After the birth of their third daughter in 1971, they settled back in Schenevus, NY. In 1984, Alma began working as a home health aide for Catholic Charities then joined Otsego County Public Health in 1986 where she worked until her retirement in 1998.
Alma's generosity and compassion was felt throughout the community through her work as a home health aide and her many volunteer activities involving Worcester Grange, Westford Methodist Church, and the Otsego County Fair Board. When her children were young she was very active in 4H and PTA.
Alma will be remembered with love by daughters, Laura Szeliga, Maureen Stevens and Kathryn Lennebacker; her much adored grandchildren, Amanda and Alex Stevens and Allison Lennebacker; sisters, Vivian Groat and Mary Ann Bryson; brother, Rodney Skellie and sister-in-law and good friend, Irma Skellie; also her close friend for over 26 years, Lawrence Roseboom, with whom she shared many good times; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by husband, Alex; sister, Francis Hawver and brother, Norman Skellie.
Calling hours will be at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, Wednesday, January 5, 2011 from 4 to 6 p.m., with a funeral service at 6 p.m., the Rev. Lawrence Russell, pastor at the Westford United Methodist Church will officiate.
Interment at will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester, Friday, May 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
