Oneonta – Audrey R. Thayer, 89, passed away at home with her family by her side on April 19, 2024.

She was born November 29, 1934 in Oneonta, the daughter of Karnes and Mary (Piper) Niles.

She graduated from Oneonta High School.

Audrey married Durward 'Duke' P. Thayer on April 1, 1956.

She worked for the NYS Department of Health and was a bus driver for both the Oneonta City School District and the City of Oneonta.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oneonta and enjoyed being an aide at Valley View Elementary School.

A large part of her life was spent as a caretaker for others. She cared for almost everyone in her family in some way, at some time. Being with and helping those she loved was her greatest joy.

She is survived by her children, Linda Wheeler of Davenport and Paul Thayer of Davenport; grandchildren, Barry (Bonnie) Wheeler, Bryan Wheeler, and Brandon (Leslie) Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Laila, Jaiden, Jaxxon Wheeler and Bayli and Bryce Wheeler; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Duke on January 18, 2015; her brother, Karnes Niles on April 18, 2024; sister-in-law, Rosalyn Niles; son-in-law, George Wheeler; as well as several brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. with the funeral service at Noon on Monday, April 29, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.

The interment will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
