ONEONTA, NY - Barbara Mary Weigand passed away on December 1, 2017 in Oneonta, New York.

Ms. Weigand was born on January 4, 1921, at Sunbryne Farm in Lebo, Kansas, to Mary Frances George and George Lawrence Weigand. She graduated from Topeka High School, Topeka, Kansas, in 1939. Ms. Weigand earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education as well as her Master of Science in Clothing and Textiles from Kansas State University in 1943.

Ms. Weigand began her professional career at Admire School as an English, Foods, and Clothing teacher in 1944. She was hired by Valley Center High School in Valley Center, Kansas, to teach Home Economics from 1945-50 and then East High School in Wichita, Kansas, to teach Clothing from 1950-52. Ms. Weigand was recruited to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, to teach Clothing and Textiles from 1952-54. Then, she was hired to teach Clothing and Textiles at State University of New York or SUNY College at Oneonta in 1954 and retired 29 years later. While at SUNY College at Oneonta, Ms. Weigand established a dual degree program with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. She was a professor and educator instilling exceptional clothing design and construction competences.

Ms. Weigand was an avid reader and a member of several books clubs. She enjoyed knitting and personalizing Christmas stockings for her cousins and great cousins. In her lifetime, she knitted over 100 Christmas stockings for family members. Additionally, Ms. Weigand excelled at and enjoyed needlepoint and quilting. In her summers, she enjoyed traveling throughout Europe as well as to every state in the United States.

Ms. Weigand was a loyal Kansas State University alum as well as Kansas City Royals baseball fan. The I-70 World Series in 1985 and again in 2014 and 2015 were legendary sports achievements which Barbara celebrated. Ms. Weigand was a lifelong Democrat and supported many democratic candidates. She voted in every national election starting in 1940 with the election of President F.D. Roosevelt.

Ms. Weigand was preceded in death by her father George Lawrence Weigand on December 3, 1920, and her mother Mary Frances Weigand on November 24, 2001. Additionally, she grew up with 13 first cousins of which Katherine Wingert Chalendar, Jackson George, Robert John Weaver, Izetta Weaver Arvidson, Rachel Weaver Dodd, George Russell McCay, Eleanor George Pasley and Dixie Lee Potter preceded her in death.

Ms. Weigand is survived by five first cousins including Phillip George, Doug George, George Wingert, Fred Wingert, and Bob Wingert.

Ms. Weigand will be buried during a private graveside service at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo, Kansas.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the St. James Manor leadership and residents. As an Oneonta resident for over 60 years, Barbara had requested any donations be sent to St. James Manor, 9 St. James Place, Oneonta, NY, 13820 in remembrance of Barbara Weigand.

Barbara's thoughtfulness will be deeply missed as she mailed the first Christmas card each and every holiday season.
