Brian
Bookhout
July 12, 1965 – May 31, 2025
SCHENEVUS - With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Brian Bookhout, a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, loyal son and brother, and a true friend to many. Brian passed away on May 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 59 years old.
Born on July 12, 1965, in Cobleskill, New York, Brian lived his life with the heart of a small-town man—humble, generous, and always there when you needed him. He proudly served in the United States Navy for ten years before beginning a long and respected career on the railroad, where his work ethic and reliability earned the admiration of many.
On September 26, 1987, Brian married the love of his life, Michele Bookhout, and together they raised three strong and spirited daughters—Brianna, Mikayla, and Taylor. He was their rock, their coach, and their biggest fan. He loved nothing more than watching them pursue their passions—whether on the soccer field, in the horse barn, or exploring the world. His pride in them was boundless.
Brian also had a deep love for the outdoors. Hunting, in particular, was a lifelong passion—one that brought him peace, patience, and the joy of tradition. Whether in the woods at sunrise, sitting quietly in a tree stand, or walking a trail with family or friends, Brian found renewal in nature. The time he spent outdoors reflected his appreciation for life's simple, grounding moments and his desire to share them with those he loved.
Brian was affectionately known as "Big Papa" and "Grampie" to his five grandchildren: Rowan and Harlow Heelein, Malakhai Valtin, and Hayden and Kennedy Rivino. He adored each one and found joy in every giggle, every game, and every quiet moment together.
He is survived by his wife Michele and their daughters, Brianna Bookhout, mother of Rowan and Harlow; Mikayla Bookhout (partner Devin Valtin), mother of Malakhai Valtin; and Taylor Bookhout (husband Ryan Watts), mother of Hayden and Kennedy. Brian is also survived by his mother, Barbara Bookhout; siblings, Brenda (Joseph) Stahl, Bonnie (Scott) Gray, and Bruce (Dawn)Bookhout, along with many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Bookhout, and his grandparents.
To many in the community, he was known as "Butch" or "Mr. B"—a nickname that matched his warmth and friendly spirit. Brian was the guy who would lend a hand without being asked, show up early to help set up the field, or offer a ride home after practice. He had a quiet strength, a quick wit, and a heart that made everyone feel welcome. Brian loved sports, not just for the game but for the way they brought people together. Whether coaching, watching, or cheering from the stands, he brought steady encouragement and endless support to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love—one built in small acts, big hugs, and a lifetime of showing up for the people who mattered most.
A celebration of Brian's life will be held 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at The Sparrow Hawk, 801 Smokey Ave., Schenevus, NY. The family ask that you bring one of your favorite photos with you to include in a personalized memory book that will be available.
