Obituary

ONEONTA – Carl A. Canis, 79, of Oneonta, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at his residence.

He was born November 4, 1929 in Providence, RI, the son of Thomas and Agnus Canis.

Carl married Eleanor Chapman on July 19, 1969 in Oneonta. She predeceased him on July 14, 1987.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States National Guard and obtained the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army.

Carl was a retired electrician with the IBEW Union 325.

He is survived by his son, Thomas C. Canis; and various relatives living mostly in Rhode Island.

Dealing with terminal heart disease, one of Carl's last requests was to live out his days at home. This was made possible with the aide of Hospice, private care, Julie Smith (a special friend of the family) and his son Tom. They worked together to make him comfortable and pain free for his last few weeks. His other request was to be put in a "pine box", (a running joke of his that was indeed purchased).

Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 9th at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 1 to 3 p.m., with the funeral service at 3 p.m, the Reverend Joseph Benintende will officiate. Calling hours will then continue in the evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Interment with Military honors will be held at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a contribution to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Dr., Oneonta, NY 13820 (607-432-6773)
