Catherine M. Gallagher (Cady) of Oneonta passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019,  at Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born in Albany on November 23, 1919, the third child of William Muirhead, Jr. and Mary Robinson Muirhead.  She was raised in Clinton Heights, and graduated from Castleton High School, where she was a star basketball player.

Cady came to Oneonta in 1937 to attend Oneonta Normal School.  It was here that she met a handsome soldier that she married on September 27, 1941.  She and John raised three children that they loved unconditionally.

"Mrs. G." taught 5th grade at Charlotte Valley Central School before taking a job teaching at Bugbee School, the Campus School for SUNY Oneonta . After the school closed she continued to work in the education department running the Resource, Ideas and Materials Center and being an off-campus supervisor for student teachers.  She loved what she did and her students loved her back.

She received both her BS and MS degrees from SUNY Oneonta, as well as one year post masters. She also attended SUNY Albany and the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.

Cady was on the College Alumni Board of Directors.  She received the Professor Emerita Award from SUNY Oneonta in 2003. She was also a  member and past president of the Oneonta Country Club Women's Golf Association, the Oneonta Garden Club, and St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by her son, Dr. John W. Gallagher and his wife, Barbara, of Plattsburgh and her daughter, Jeannie Hobkirk and her husband, Bob, of Oneonta. She is survived also by her grandchildren, Sean Gallagher and his wife, Paula; Catherine Hobkirk; Cara Hobkirk Mussaw and her husband, Ken; Rob Hobkirk and his wife, Ashu, as well as her nine great grandchildren, Kevin, Jonah and Zoe Gallagher, Trey, Brent and Jayden Hathaway, Ryan and Kylie Mussaw and Sophia Hobkirk.  She also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Patricia Gallagher Gorton and Rosalie Gallagher Pollman, numerous nieces and nephews including her brother's children, Scott, Jan and Linda Muirhead.

Catherine was predeceased by her loving husband, John Joseph Gallagher (2000), her grandson, Patrick Joseph Gallagher (2012), and her daughter, Maureen A. Gallagher (2016).

Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the Lewis, Hurley and Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:15 a.m., Friday, June 14, 2019, at St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Catherine's name be made to Oneonta Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 1083, Oneonta, NY, 13820 to go toward a scholarship for a high school senior going into the field of education.
