WORCESTER - Cora B. Sisum, 85, a longtime resident of Worcester, NY passed away Sunday afternoon, May 16, at Royal Haven Nursing Home in Front Royal, Virginia, after a prolonged illness.
She was born in Summit, NY, the daughter of John and Bertha (Morrison) Fancher. She attended Worcester Central School and on September 22, 1946, married Ernest W. (Bill) Sisum. After a brief residence in Westford, the couple built their home on Decatur Road in Worcester. It was there that Cora resided for 55 years.
Cora worked for nearly thirty years as a teacher's aide at the Worcester Central School—retiring at age 75. As an active member of the community, she was a founder and charter member of the Worcester Hose Co. Auxiliary, and served as its first president in 1964. She was a lifetime member of the Worcester United Methodist Church and participated in many of its community service and fundraising activities. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and, above all, spending time with family and friends.
Cora is survived by her daughter Deborah Sisum, son-in-law Paul Capozzola, and grandson, Matthew Capozzola, all of Oak Hill, Virginia. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill of 43 years who died on April 19, 1989. She was the last of her 10 brothers and sisters to pass away. They were: Emmett, Ella Mae, Viola Alice, Paul, Wilson, Leo, Ethel, Arnold, Walter, and Maynard.
Cora was a gentle and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. She was loved by her family more than words can express and we will miss her terribly.
Friends and relatives are invited to call between 3 and 4 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the Worcester United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. with the Reverend Susan Wenner presiding.
