Obituary

ONEONTA – Craig H. Townsend, 67, passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at his home after a courageous battle with prostate cancer; with great dignity and without complaint he remained strong for those he loved.

He was born November 23, 1942 in Oneonta, the son of Albert and Ernestine (Hyde) Townsend.

Craig was a graduate of Oneonta High School and the State University College at Oneonta. After graduation he joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and moved out west where he became leader for the rural Missouri area. In the early 1970's he went to work for Otsego County Department of Social Services as a Case Worker. He then was employed at Broome Developmental Services as a Social Worker, where he retired.

Craig was a quiet man with much integrity who always led by example. Without reservation he would provide help and support to all that he could. Most importantly to those around him, he was a devoted husband and father who worked hard to provide a welcoming, loving home for his family. He regularly enjoyed running and was proud to complete both the Pitt run a full lap of Otsego Lake. He was also an avid Yankee fan and took great pleasure from their recent World Series triumph.

Craig is survived by his wife, Patricia (Otvos) Townsend, whom he married on June 6, 1981 in Oneonta; his daughter, Maura Townsend and her fiancé, Sean Buckley of Philadelphia, PA; three nieces, Rachael Geelan, Amy Maurer and Sheri Cilano; his brother-in-law, Tracy Reynolds; his father's widow, Betty Townsend; a grandniece, a grandnephew and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Reynolds.
