Obituary

ONEONTA - Curtis James Herrick, 88 died peacefully on December 23rd 2014. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 8, 1926 to A. Curtis and Alda S. Herrick. He was predeceased by his wife Lois Herrick and two younger sisters Betty Powell and Barbara Herrick.



Jim graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1942 and from Franklin and Marshall College in 1945. He then attended Harvard University for a short time before being drafted into the Army where he served until 1947. He used the GI Bill to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he received his Masters of Arts in Psychology in 1950. Later he completed his Doctoral course work at Penn State University.



In 1951 he married Lois Shetler. They are survived by their two sons and their wives, Craig and Lizbeth (Huyer) Herrick of Liverpool and Kevin and Denise (Camp) Herrick of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Christopher Jason (Jake) Herrick and his wife Kerry of Syracuse, Samuel Herrick of Rochester and Brittney and Mallory Herrick of Oneonta; and one great granddaughter Clara Jane Herrick.



Jim taught Psychology at Bloomfield College and Seminary in New Jersey, Bates College in Maine and Rhode Island College of Education.. In 1960 he came to Hartwick College in Oneonta NY where he served several terms as the Chairman of the Psychology Department before retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 1990.



He was a life member of the American Psychological Association and the National Education Association. He was a charter member of the Catskill Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa an honorary education fraternity. Locally he served as Chairman of the Community Chest and President of the Oneonta Shrine Club. Jim was a member of the Oneonta Lodge 426 F and A M and was a 32nd degree Mason with over 50 years of service in various Masonic bodies.



Although mostly homebound in recent years Jim enjoyed get-togethers with former Hartwick colleagues self entitled the "ROMEO's" – Retired Old Men Eating Out. He also was very proud of and enjoyed following the activities and accomplishments of his 4 grandchildren.



Calling hours will be 11am - Noon Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. A Masonic Service will be at Noon followed by the with funeral service, officiated by Pastor Richard Breuninger.



Burial of Jim and Lois will be immediately following at the Glenwood Cemetery.
