COOPERSTOWN - David W. Carlson, a reputable and accomplished Planning Consultant who obtained over $200 million in Federal and New York State funding for his client communities, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2010.
David was born May 26, 1949 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey to Richard and Doris Carlson. One of his proudest early accomplishments was attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, and he lived his life according to the Scout Motto. He graduated Bloomfield High School in 1967 with the notable achievement of scoring the tying goal in the 1966 New Jersey State Soccer Championship.
David pursued higher education at Bates College, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. During his studies, he met Linda Pierce, and the couple married at the tender age of 21 - a loyal and loving marriage that would last.
The couple settled in New Jersey, where David spent the next two years working full time and simultaneously completing a Masters Degree in City and Regional Planning at Pratt Institute. He began his career with the prestigious Planners Diversified firm in New Jersey and later established the Cooperstown branch in 1987, which he transitioned into his own firm, Carlson Associates, in 1991. Carlson Associates was dedicated to providing personal service of the highest quality and integrity to client communities, government officials, and businesses.
David leaves behind his beloved wife, Linda, and his two adult children, Steven and Lauren. He was an avid supporter of his children and their athletic achievements and was proud to be attending their many sporting events throughout their high school years. His family remembers him at his happiest when taking family vacations (from Switzerland to Mexico to the Dominican Republic and Canada and all corners of the United States) and when playing golf. He was especially fond of his Thursday and Sunday foursomes at Oneonta Country Club.
An event in David's honor will be held at the Oneonta Country Club, 9 Country Club Road in Oneonta on Saturday, October 2 from 3 to 6 p.m. with a celebration at 4 p.m. All friends are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
David requested that donations be made to the Friends of Bassett, Columbia-Bassett Medical School, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown NY 13326, to support the doctors who helped him so much in his last days and train new ones to help diagnose others.
