David N. Colliton, 94, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in his home, peacefully, with his family by his side.
He was the son of Lena B. (Dugan) and Fred J. Colliton. David was born April 12, 1912, in Jefferson. He attended Davenport High School and Schenectady Vocational School, where he trained to be a welder.
On Nov. 17, 1947, he married Beulah Jacobsen at Elkton, Md.
David served his country during World War II aboard the heavy cruiser USS Chester in the Pacific Theater and again during the Korean War aboard aircraft carrier USS Mindora.
After the war, David and his wife, Beulah, settled in Laurens. They had many business adventures including a hardware store, gas station, laundromat, beauty shop and liquor store. David was a licensed real-estate salesman for more than 50 years, his last involvement being affiliated with Mt. Vision Realty. David worked as a welder for Raymond Corporation and Medical Coaches. He served as a rural letter carrier out of Laurens, from which he retired after 20 years.
David was always interested in politics. He served as chairman of the Otsego County Democratic Committee and chairman of the Town of Laurens Democratic Committee for many years. He served as mayor of Laurens Village for 14 years. During his administration, Knapp Park was constructed and dedicated. David also served as councilman for several terms for the village of Laurens.
As president of the Laurens Cemetery Association, David was responsible for the construction of the cemetery office building. The building was named in honor of David in May 2005.
David was a charter member of Laurens Memorial Legion Post No. 1688 and was honored with a life membership from his comrades. He was a past commander and acted as chaplain for many years and was a life member of Oneonta Post No. 1206 VFW. David belonged to Laurens Masonic Order No. 518. He was a member of the USS Chester Association and enjoyed attending their reunions.
David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beulah and three children, two daughters, Katherine Taylor of Ilion, Betsy Ann VanAntwerp of Tampa, Fla., and one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Elsie Colliton of Amsterdam; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours at David's request. He will be cremated.
Laurens Legion Post No. 1688 will honor David with a graveside memorial service and committal at 11 a.m. on May 12, 2007 in the Laurens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in David's memory to Laurens Memorial Legion Post No. 1688, building fund, or to Laurens Emergency Squad.
