ONEONTA – David J. Hamwey, 94, passed away July 29, 2017 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.
He was born February 22, 1923 in Mt. Vision, the son of John and Grace (Peters) Hamwey.
He graduated from Oneonta High School Class of 1942.
David was a United States Army veteran.
He married Margaret Cooper on September 24, 1944 in Oneonta.
David and Margaret owned and operated the Riverview Motel and Grist Mill Country Store for many years. He was also employed with the State University College at Oneonta in the maintenance department, retiring in 1990. David was a professional woodworker and cabinet maker, building and customizing his homes and businesses. He and his wife enjoyed riding his motorcycle whenever possible.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hamwey of Oneonta; children, David J. Hamwey Jr. of Graham, WA, Timothy A. Hamwey of Worcester, Janice M. (Bruce) Smith of Oneonta; grandchildren, Jason, Jared, Jamie, Elizabeth, Morgan, Bella, and Eric; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Harley and Brooke; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by 7 siblings.
A time for visitation will be 11 a.m. to the service at Noon on Wednesday, August 2nd at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.
The interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
