MARYLAND - Dennis G. Hamill, 84, died Sunday afternoon, May 8, 2011, at home.


Born on March 9, 1927 in Shavertown, Dennis was the son of Pastor Joshua and Florence (Turkington) Hamill.


He enlisted in the United States Army in June 1945. He was a Paratrooper, Gliderman, and Rifleman serving as Assistant Squad Leader assigned to the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Japan. He graduated from Andrew S. Draper Central School.


Dennis was employed by General Electric in Schenectady where he held several different positions in all aspects of manufacturing in the Motor and Steam Turbine Division, retiring as Superintendant after 39 years.


He was a lifetime resident of the Town of Maryland. Dennis is survived by his bride of 62 years, Eleanor (Pape) Hamill, along with their eight children: Christine Hamill, Deborah (Doug) Cline, Linda (Ted) Thomas, Dennis (Rita) Hamill, James Hamill, Rebecca Hamill, Ellie Hamill, Rachel (Sean) Hazlett, as well as sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.


Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday May 14, 2011 at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.
