Obituary

ONEONTA – Diane E. Slocum, 65, passed away, Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Berkshire Medical Center Pittsfield, MA.



She was born January 2, 1947 in Albany NY, the daughter of Milton and Jeanette (Levine) Kaufman, deceased.



Diane graduated from Albany High School in 1965. She continued her education at the State University of New York at Oneonta, NY



Diane committed her life to quality education for all. She was a kindergarten teacher at Laurens Central School from 1984 to 2004. She was also in migrant education, working at Grand Gorge Central School and Gilboa-Connesville Central School. She was very active in many school organizations, including teaching summer school class for 20 years.



Diane was a member of the League of Women's Voters, Friends of the Huntington Library Board, 69 Book Group, Mah Jongg league and former member of the Catskill Regional Center Board. She was an elder and deacon at the Laurens Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent. Diane also was Council member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Laurens and taught Vacation Bible School.



Diane was a beautiful and avid quilter. She achieved a level 1 Reiki certification and was renowned and adored for her butter cookies. She found great joy in her active attention to and involvement in the lives of her much beloved grandsons. Another big part of her life was Diane's much loved dogs, Mallary the Boston Terrier and Bella the Poodle.



She is survived by her loving family; beloved sons Aaron D. Slocum of Binghamton, NY, Jason M. Slocum of Oneonta, NY and Eric L. and wife, Jennifer Slocum, parents of her grandsons Gabriel and Jeremy, all of Burleson, TX; her dear brother, Stuart P. and wife, Mary Ellen Kaufman of Albany NY; she will also be missed by her devoted sister, Ellen S. Kaufman and her dog Kalvin A. Kaufman of Albany, NY.



The committal service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at the Laurens Village Cemetery.



A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Laurens with the Rev. Paul Messner, officiating.



At Diane's request, no flowers, please. Donations may be sent to American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
