Oneonta - Donald M. Lewis, 91, a long-time resident of the St. James' Manor in Oneonta, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2019 in Oneonta.
Donald was born on June 28, 1927 in Gilboa, NY and was a son of the late M. Leland and Alice (Cole) Lewis.
Donald served honorably in the United States Army. He later graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelors' degree in Botany. He was employed by the N.Y.S Department of Education in Albany, NY as a botanist until the time of his retirement.
He was a member of the Gilboa United Methodist Church and was a long-standing member of the Metropolitan Opera. Don was a simple man that was very family orientated. He was witty and knowledgeable in so many different ways. Don is remembered for his generosity, dry sense of humor, and the abundant love he gave to his family.
Donald is survived by his loving niece, Donna (Harold) Vroman of Charlotteville, NY and their children, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Vroman and Jennifer (Daniel) Cook; great-grand nephews and nieces, Matthew and Abigail Vroman and Avery and Kellan Cook; cousins, Mary Dennis Sample of Arizona and Robert Vinyard of Renton, WA; and many other loving extended family members, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, M. Leland and Alice Lewis; brother, Richard Lewis; sister-in-law, Theresa Lewis and an infant brother, Robert Lewis.
A Remembrance Service will be held at Noon on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the St. James' Manor, 9 St. James' Place, Oneonta, with Pastor Dotti Morris of the Gilboa United Methodist Church, officiating.
Memorial contributions in memory of Donald may be made to the Gilboa United Methodist Church, Route 990 V, Gilboa, NY 12076 or the St. James' Manor, Attn: Activities Fund, 9 St. James' Place, Oneonta, NY 13820.
Don's family would like to express their sincerest gratitude for the compassion, concern and care given to Don by Dr. Gregory Xanthaky and his staff and also the remarkable staff at St. James' Manor. Their efforts to provide exceptional service are acknowledged.
