Obituary

Laurens - Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Douglas K. Layman, US Navy (Retired), 89, passed away at home on May 30, 2026.

He was born February 4, 1937 in Oneonta, the son of William H. and Laura C. (Snyder) Layman of Laurens, NY.

He graduated from Laurens Central School in 1954 and from Albright College, Reading, PA in 1958. He was commissioned an Ensign US Navy in 1958 at Officers’ Candidate School in Newport, RI.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Clara “Dolly” Vincze in 1959 at the Laurens Presbyterian Church. They were married 54 years. She predeceased him in 2013.

As a US Navy LCDR he was stationed at Washington, DC, Yokohama, Japan, Honolulu, Hawaii, Little Creek, VA and served in the Vietnam War in Saigon. He was the Commanding Officer NAV SEC GROUP in Winter Harbor, ME, at Fort George Meade, MD, he worked at NSA until retirement. He retired from the Navy in 1978.

After his Navy retirement, LCDR Layman earned an applied science degree in Natural Resources from SUNY at Cobleskill. He served as a member of the Division of Law Enforcement in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the next 19 years and retired with the rank of Investigator.

He was a member of the Naval Cryptological Society, the Oneonta Veterans Club and the Laurens American Legion, the Laurens Presbyterian Church. He was an avid golfer, tennis player and played various sports all his life and has always been considered a very generous man, loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is survived by their sons, Mark Layman (Sue), Douglas Layman, Jr. (Stacy), Michael Layman (Susan); grandchildren Mark Layman Jr. (Mary), Kimberly Sonthana (Kevin), Ryan Layman, Keira Layman (Sam), David Layman (Gabi), Andrew Layman, and Emily Layman; great grandchildren, Preston, Madison, Tenley, and Max.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at the Elm Row Cemetery in Laurens.

The family plans to hold a Celebration of Life at a later date and will announce details when available.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer's Association or to the Laurens Emergency Squad, 34 Main St., Laurens, NY 13796.
