Obituary

WEST ONEONTA – Douglas C. Saxton, 84, of West Oneonta, NY and Turtle Lake Development in Naples, FL, died after a brief illness on September 9, 2017 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY.

He was born September 25, 1932 in Cooperstown, the son of Harold J. and Iva (McRorie) Saxton of Cooperstown.

Douglas graduated from Cooperstown Central School in 1950 and received a BS degree from State University Teachers College at Oneonta in 1954. He later did graduate work at Central Connecticut State University.

He married Edna Perrine Wright "Perrie", 1975 in West Oneonta, where they have made their home for 42 years.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving form January 1, 1955 thru January 1, 1957.

Douglas was a Math Teacher at Cobleskill Central School for 37 years, retiring in 1995. For the last 20 years, he and Perrie lived winters in Naples, FL.  When there, he served as a substitute teacher in the Collier County School System.

He was a life-long fan of baseball, having played in both High School and College. During the summers, he very much enjoyed working at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for a number of years.

Douglas was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta; the Oneonta Lodge No. 1312 B.P.O.E.; and was active in The Executive Service Corp (ESC) of Otsego/Delaware Counties for several years. He served a number of years as Treasurer of the New York State Math Teachers Association.

He enjoyed golf, playing in a league in Oneonta for many years, as well as in Naples, FL during the winter. He looked forward to the winter months in Florida, and travelled to new and different places in and out of the United States.  He thoroughly enjoyed telling stories, especially when spending time with his grandchildren.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 42 years, Perrie Saxton and their family: two daughters, Kathryn Weagley of Binghamton, NY and Connie and husband, Ed Gross of Wells Bridge, NY; granddaughter, Jessica Gross and fiancé, Jonathan Stringer and two great-grandchildren, Martin and Leighna Stringer, all of Port Crane, NY; three sons, Richard S. and wife, Robin Wright of Wilmington, MA, grandson, Jared and wife, Emily Wright of Quincy, MA, grandson, Justin Wright of Wilmington, MA; son, Mark Wright of Binghamton, NY; granddaughter, Emily and husband, Mike Stefanski, great-grandchildren, Hank and Ivey Stefanski, all of Wallingford, PA; grandson, Mike Saunders, great-granddaughter, Maria Saunders, both of Smithfield, RI; and son, David and wife, Gerri Wright, grandson, Harrison Wright, all of Charlton, MA; as well as numerous cousins and close friends.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY, with the Rev. Teressa Sivers, officiating. The family will receive friends starting at 1:30 PM prior to service.  A reception will follow the service.

The interment will be announced at a later date in the spring.
