Edna S. Schaffer's Obituary
ONEONTA – Edna S. Schaffer, 82, passed away, Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she resided for the last 8 years.
She was born March 7, 1930 in Oneonta, the daughter of Milo and Florence (Wood) Strong. Edna grew up on the family farm, near Westville, and graduated from Milford Central School.
She married Lawrence J. Schaffer on October 3, 1952 in Westville, NY.
Edna was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Oneonta and she was proud to be one of four generations of her family that worshipped together at the "Red Door Church".
She worked for many years as the office manager for Oneonta optometrist, Karl J. Schoonover, OD.
Edna loved to travel, and enjoyed seeing the country with her husband. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, crocheting, knitting and word search puzzles. She also loved spending time in her gardens. Edna's husband Larry was active in the Boy Scouts for over 50 years and so was Edna. They enjoyed many Boy Scout functions together over the years. She had a unique sense of humor and loved spending time with her family, especially cooking for them.
She is survived by her children, Connie and husband, Dave Mattice of Oneonta and Craig "Mooch" and wife, Karen Schaffer of Otego; grandchildren, Carol and husband, Adam Pierce, Daniel and wife, Kim Mattice, Ryan and wife, Talene Schaffer, Rachel, Philip and Bradley Schaffer; 2 great-grandchildren, Makenzie and Andrew Pierce; brother, Arthur and wife, Bernice Strong of Westville; a sister, Helen and husband, Ray Southworth of Westville, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Larry on October 26, 1996.
A service to celebrate the life of Edna will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2012 at the First United Presbyterian Church, the "Red Door Church", 2 Walling Ave., Oneonta, with the Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Walton-Leavitt, officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Following the service, there will be a luncheon provided in the church social hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church, 2 Walling Ave., Oneonta, NY 13820.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the wonderful and loving care that Edna received at Fox Nursing Home Unit 3 and also from Catskill Area Hospice.
