Obituary

Oneonta – Eleanore L. Smith, 96, a resident of The Plains at Parish Homestead in Oneonta, passed away January 30, 2017.

She was born March 11, 1920 the daughter of Raymond and Cora (Munroe) Holbrook near Cooperstown.

Eleanore married the love of her life, Stuart P. Smith on January 18, 1941 at her parents' home in Whig Corners. They were wed for 64 before Stuart passed away in June 2005. They lived in Oneonta from the time they married and resided most of their years at 9 Rose Avenue.

She worked for her father at Ray's Express and also the General Store at her family homestead. After getting married she was employed at Scintilla in Sidney before starting a family. Once her youngest child was in junior high, she began working as the bookkeeper at Coddington's Florist where she was employed for approximately 30 years. Eleanore was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta. She and Stuart were avid square and round dancers and members of the Tri County Twirlers Club. She also loved quilting and crocheting and giving the fruits of her labor to family and friends.

She is survived by her three children, Caryl and wife, Fran Smith of Broadalbin, Dennis and wife, Janet Smith of Palm Harbor, FL, and Nancy and husband, Marc Goldberg of Guttenberg, NJ; five grandchildren, Shawne, Scott, Justin, Brian and Sheryl; seven great grandchildren; brother, Raymond ("Chet") Holbrook of North Syracuse; sister-in-law, Mary Finch of St. Johnsville, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service at the Hartwick Cemetery Noon, Saturday, June 17, 2017.
