Obituary

ONEONTA - Elsie D. Hyer died at the A. O. Fox Nursing Home on Monday, June 27, 2011 just one day shy of her 101st birthday.

Elsie was born June 28, 1910, in Somerville, New Jersey, daughter of Isaac and Ada (Myers) Wyckoff. She was graduated from New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass College) in 1931 and worked for Mutual of New York, where she met E. Donald Hyer. They were married on September 9, 1933.

For much of her life she resided in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, where she was active in the First Methodist Church and its WSCS, as well as the Woman's Club. A housewife, she devoted her life to her immediate and extended family and her community, welcoming visitors with chocolate chip cookies and butternut pound cake. She lived for a time in Silver Spring, Maryland, and relocated to Oneonta in 1989 to share a home with her daughter and grandchildren, before moving the A. O. Fox Nursing Home seven years ago.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Ralph, Jr.) Adolfsen of Oneonta, and two sons, Donald (Joann) Hyer of Brick, New Jersey, and Robert (Susan) Hyer of Bluffton, South Carolina. Nine grandchildren, including Stephen Busche (John Palmer) of Menands and Betsy Busche (Robert Cross) of Earlville, also survive, along with 15 great-grandchildren. Elsie was predeceased by her brother, Wilbur, and her former husband.

A service to celebrate Elsie's long life is planned 11 a.m., Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta.
