Eugene "Jeep"

Eugene Raymond Clough died peacefully at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown on February 22, 2023.
Born in Oneonta on April 20, 1936, Eugene was the son of Lloyd A. and Ethel (Llewellyn) Clough.
He was raised by his uncle Cyrus Wightman and aunt Pauline on Crumhorn Mountain.
When he was a kid he was nicknamed "Jeep" which stuck with him for his entire life.
Jeep attended Milford Central School and Oneonta High School, where he played football, baseball and basketball. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1954.
He attended Alfred University and served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960.
Jeep married Beverly Eckler in the Milford Methodist Church on October 29, 1960.
He worked at the Sikorsky Aircraft, the U.S. Postal Service, Wightman Lumber, and the Town of Milford. Jeep owned and operated his own business, Clough Lumber. He later worked as a maintenance man for the Milford Commons and at SUNY Oneonta for 25 years where he was a carpenter
Besides being a hard worker, Jeep was an athlete and a volunteer.
He played semi-pro baseball for the Milford MACS for 19 years. He was the head coach for the Milford American Legion Post 1566 baseball team for 20 years. He followed the semi-pro Oneonta Indians when his brother Ed was the general manager. He also enjoyed going with his family to the high school football and basketball games in Section 3 and 4.
He was a fireman in the Milford Fire Department for 30 years. Jeep also competed in the MFD firematics team. He ordered all the food and ran the concessions when the fire department held fairs to raise funds for the MFD.
An accomplished bowler, Jeep competed in several leagues and often traveled to state legion tournaments. In the 1982-1983 season he was named the OBA Bowler of the Year. January 4, 1989 Jeep bowled a perfect game. In 1992 he was inducted into the OBA Hall of Fame.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 1566 and served as Commander in 1980. Jeep volunteered countless hours working on legion dinners, clam bakes, chicken barbecues and making refreshments for bingo.
He played in several slow pitch softball tournaments. Jeep loved to golf. He played many of the local courses and some tournaments, while also going to the local driving ranges with his son Tom.
He was a hunter and a fisherman who harvested many fine bucks and fish over the years. One of the most treasured hunting/fishing trips was to Canada with his friends from Syracuse to hunt Caribou. He was a member of the Crumhorn Rod & Gun Club. He attended their yearly clam bakes and competed in trap shooting at these events.
He loved sports and was an avid fan of the New York Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Celtics, Syracuse Orangemen and Duke Blue Devils basketball teams. His favorite drivers in NASCAR were Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch. He also loved taking his family to dirt races across the state.
He liked doing Sudoku puzzles and cooking in his spare time. On summer holidays he would often barbecue chicken and steam clams for the family. Jeep always cooked a mouthwatering turkey on Thanksgiving and a delicious prime rib on Christmas Day. His deviled eggs were a hit of every holiday party too.
Jeep is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverly (Eckler) Clough; son, Thomas Clough and daughter, Cheryl Clough, all of Milford; his beloved pet and little buddy Kit Kat; his half-sister, Doreen Clough of Florence, Oregon; brother-in-law, Donald Eckler and his family daughters, Casey Eckler, Carey Eckler Sutphin and granddaughter, Lexi Sutphin, all of Milford; his sister-in-law, Deborah Clough of Laurens and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jeep was predeceased by his stepfather, Herb Schulze; brothers, Edward Clough and Simeon Clough; sister-in-law, Ann Eckler.
A celebration of Jeep's life will be held from 1 PM to 5 PM March 11, at the Milford Fire House.
