ONEONTA – Florence D. Balnis, 95, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 9, 2011 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born August 27, 1915 in Oneonta, the daughter of Pearsall and Kathryn Dutcher.
Florence graduated from Oneonta High School and attended Oneonta Normal School (SUCO).
She married Joseph Balnis in New Milford, PA.
Together she and her husband, Joseph operated "Joe's Bait & Sport Shop" until 1978.
She was truly devoted to her family and was always interested in their activities. Before she became blind, she enjoyed fishing, playing cards, crossword puzzles, dancing and playing slot machines at Turning Stone. Many of these enjoyments of life were shared with her beloved friends, who helped to create the fond memories and good times. Florence was also an avid New York Yankees fan.
Florence's loving family includes, son, Wayne Balnis, Sr. of Oneonta; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dewey Rogers of West Oneonta; grandchildren, Wayne Balnis, Jr. (Carla) of Oneonta, Sherry Pidgeon (Brian) of Oneonta, Laurie Page (Steve) of Maryland, Renee Konicki (James) of Voorheesville, Rhonda VanShufflin (William) of Oriskany; great-grandchildren, Joseph and Caryn Balnis of Oneonta, Katrina and Shannon VanShufflin of Oriskany, Victoria and Adam Konicki of Voorheesville.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Balnis; daughter-in-law, Patricia Balnis; and a sister, Vivian Gibson.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.
The funeral service will be Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Deacon James Konicki, Florence's grandson, officiating.
Interment will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
