Donald Knapp

SCHENEVUS – Frederick Donald "Don" Knapp, 88, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 2, 2018 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
He was born April 12, 1930 in Schenevus, the son of Fred and Edna (Lansing) Knapp.
Don married Polly Thayer in Cooperstown on June 30, 1950 and began their life together in Elk Creek.
Don was a lifetime resident of the hamlet of Elk Creek where he operated a dairy farm and drove school bus for the Schenevus Central School District for 42 years. Don was known for driving the out of town bus for sporting activities and the BOCES bus to Milford. He was president of the local CSEA Union and the Elk Creek Cemetery Association. He was also a member of the Elk Creek Grange and the Dairyman's League Corporation. Don had a great love for flying; he was a private pilot and owned his own airplane on the family farm. Friends and neighbors will remember him for the guy always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a good working knowledge of equipment and was able to repair or rebuild almost anything to make it better.
He is survived by children, Ted and wife, Joanna and Terry and wife, Carol, all of Schenevus, Karen and husband, Kent Bernard of Florida; 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his life partner and wife of 68 years, Polly who passed away 12 days earlier on June 20, 2018 and his sister, Dorothy Syron of Oneonta.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. with the funeral starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Heller & Skinner Funeral Home, 155 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.
Private interment will be held at Elk Creek Cemetery.
