ONEONTA – Frederick L. Munson, 96, passed away November 26, 2018 at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 8, 1922 in Oneonta, the son of Lewis and Mable (Murphy) Munson.

He married Audrey Clark on July 29, 1945 in Oneonta. She predeceased him on August 3, 2014.

At the end of high school, Fred was encouraged to become a business owner. He started Truck Gardening, a dairy, chicken and vegetable delivery service.  He and his friend, Ed Shultis Sr. had over 700 laying chickens and delivered eggs door to door.  Following Fred's enlistment with the United States Army during World War II where he was stationed in the Philippians, he returned home and starting working with his cousin at Munson's Brothers Inc.  Eventually he started Fuel Oil Delivery, one of the first in area.  After selling his business delivery route he built the Emmons Roller Rink, during this time working as a carpenter and house painter.  In 1964 together with wife, Audrey they established Munson's Building Supplies, which continues to be owned and operated with his family.

Fred was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, where he was the treasurer for 5 years; the Odd Fellows and the Reminiscers' Car Club.   He enjoyed traveling with his wife.  He was an avid gardener.  You could always count on his good vegetables.

He is survived by his children, Shirley (Bob) Goble, Steven (Dar) Munson, Kathleen Munson Winkler, Michael (Diane) Munson; 9 grandchildren, Robert Goble, Denise (Dave) Pickard, Rena (Lauren) Goble; Shawn (Tricia) Munson, Shaynon Munson; Danielle (Michael) Smalls, Brittany Winkler, Sarah and Allison Munson; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jordan Goble and their mother, Christine Goble, Grace, Hayden and Ethan Pickard, Taylor and Jadyn Munson, Morgan and Logan Jipson,  Ava and Arron Smalls; two great-great grandchildren, Ryder Montgomery and Camdyn Fisher.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. with the funeral service at 4 p.m., on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St, Oneonta. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Walton-Leavit will be officiating.

Interment with military honors will be private at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
