Obituary

STAMFORD – George Marcus, 90, passed peacefully at home on January 15, 2015.

He was born on September 21, 1924, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to Abraham Marcus and Dora Eisenberg Marcus. He married Peggy Schiffman in 1947, having met her at Cornell University where he received undergraduate and law degrees. Prior to attending Cornell, he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and served during World War II. George was a loving, devoted husband to his wife Peggy, who was the center of his life, a loving, involved father to his daughters Debra and Madeline ("Lynn"), and a loving, proud grandfather to his granddaughters Rebecca and Sarah.

First Lieutenant George Marcus proudly served his country in 1944 and 1945. Flying as a navigator on a B-24 out of Italy, he completed 45 combat missions, and operated the radar in the lead airplane for all of those missions. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 4 Battle Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.

After college and law school at Cornell University, George and his wife Peggy moved to Stamford in 1950, and he became a partner with attorneys Harold Rushmore and Edwin Mason, with J.D. Crocker joining soon after, to form the firm Rushmore, Mason, Marcus and Crocker. His partners predeceased him and he continued with a solo law practice. In 1963 he was the Democratic candidate for County Judge. George was well respected for his integrity and honesty, as well as his meticulous attention to detail. Many attorneys in Delaware County say that George mentored them, and that he was the person they called for advice when they were learning a new area of law. He was a familiar figure in Stamford, walking to his office every day, regardless of weather or advancing age.

George served on the Stamford Central School Board of Education for many years, including several terms as President of the Board. He was an active member of the SUNY Delhi College Council from 1978 to 2004, serving as Chair of the Council from 1982 to 1996. He also participated in the Free and Accepted Masons.

George is survived by daughters, Lynn Marcus and Debra Marcus and her husband, John Nader; granddaughters, Rebecca and Sarah; step grandchildren, Mark and Rachel; brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Audrey Gore Marcus; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sheldon and Pauline Schiffman; cousin, Jack Wild and his wife, Isabel Wild; many nieces and nephews; his caregiver, Angel and her husband, Paul Schultz and their children, Joshua and Maria.
