DECATUR – George Harmer Smith, Sr., 82, entered into the presence of Jesus on October 29, 2015, he was home with his loving family.
He was born October 27, 1933 in Freeport, the son of Raymond and Melissa (Harmer) Smith.
He grew up in North Bellmore, graduated from Mepham High School and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn with a BA in Fine Arts.
George was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1956 to 1963 and was stationed in Alaska.
He married Trudy Smith in 1961 in Seaford, NY.
George worked as an Illustrator for Grumman Aerospace in Hicksville. During retirement he enjoyed carpentry and designing homes. He was an accomplished Water Color Artist, his work has been displayed in galleries in New York and Maine. He was proud of the awards he was honored with at several Juried Art Shows. George was a member of the Central New York Water Color Society, the Cooperstown Art Association, and was the Planning Board Chairman of Decatur.
He is survived by his wife, Trudy Smith of Decatur; son, George H. Smith Jr. and wife, Susan of Little Falls; son, William H. Smith and wife, Kathryn of Guilderland; his grandchildren, Elisabeth, Luke, Sue Grace, her husband Adam, and George III; brother, Raymond H. Smith and wife, Genevieve of Sag Harbor; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be 1 p.m., Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, NY, with his son, the Rev. William H. Smith, officiating.
