Obituary

ONEONTA – George Solovitch, 86, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, after a lengthy illness.

He was born December 6, 1922 in Oneonta, the son of Enatz and Ina (Suchinck) Solovitch.

George married Frances Lawler in 1944 in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

George was a United States Navy Veteran, serving from 1944 to 1946 during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was proud to serve his country in World War II aboard the USS Menard APA 201. They made the invasion of Okinawa and took occupation troops into Nagasaki, Japan.

George was a life long resident of Oneonta and was a 7 Up distributor for 30 years.

He was a member of the Oneonta Bowman, putting on demonstrations at the Clinton Arena; the Oneonta Pistol Shooters; a life member of the Oneonta Sportsman Club and the Oneonta VFW; and was also a member of the Oneonta Country Club for 50 years.

George was a great hunter, fisherman and trapper. As a great golfer he was the club champion and winner of the President's Cup several times at OCC. His lowest score shot at OCC was 58. He had 8 holes in one; his greatest hole in one was in 1975 at the Margaretville Member Guest with Ivan Misner, when on the 10th hole of sudden death George made a hole in one to win the tournament.

George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances; a daughter-in-law, Janet; a sister-in-law, Pat; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, George Jr. in 2003 and his brother, Andrew in 2003.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 10 a.m. to the service time at 11 a.m., with the Reverend John Burns, pastor at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Morris, officiating

Interment with military honors will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in loving memory of George to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Dr., Oneonta, NY 13820.
