ONEONTA - Gladys Mabel Axhoj, beloved wife of the late Axel, loving mother of Peter (Marion) and Leila (Bill), dearest grandmother of Tammie, Sheryl, Tarrie, Sheila and Kristen, and a delighted great-grandmother of twelve.
Mrs. Axhoj was born in 1912 in Plankinton, South Dakota. Her mother passed away when she was an infant, and her father took her back to Copenhagen, Denmark, where she was reared. She and Axel were married in 1935. In 1938, with their infant son, Peter, they came to the United States to make their home.
In partnership with Axel, they founded and operated the Winney Hill Lumber Company in Oneonta, from 1947 to 1970.
She was a past-matron of Queen Amelia Court #64 Order of Amaranth; past-president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter BH, Oneonta; a Paul Harris Fellow; member of Hartwick Citizen Board. Mr. and Mrs. Axhoj were awarded the Mr. & Mrs. Oneonta for the year 2000 by the Future for Oneonta Foundation. Mrs. Axhoj was a member of the First Methodist Church in Oneonta.
Gladys blessed us all with her endless love and her positive outlook.
She died peacefully in her home on Saturday, January 17, 2009.
