ONEONTA – Gladys H. Lawson, 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at the Focus Nursing and Rehabilitation at Otsego.
She was born June 19, 1927 in Patchogue, the daughter of Charles and Agnes (Siska) Hrabak. She graduated from Milford Central School in 1944. At her graduation, Gladys' commencement speech was entitled "France Fights On".
Gladys married Robert J. Lawson on September 14, 1958 at the Lutheran Church in Oneonta.
She was a Certified Public Accountant. Gladys opened her own business working with many individual people, companies and municipalities. She worked for a variety of local businesses and the Town of Davenport as a bookkeeper and accountant.
Gladys was founding member of the Pindars Corners Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Davenport VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was active in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, where she served as financial secretary and served on the Altar Guild. Gladys was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and an assistant Girl Scout Leader.
Gladys dearly loved her beautiful granddaughters. She enjoyed gathering shells on Captiva Island with the girls, along with watching them compete at many Morgan horse shows.
She was an avid gardener who enjoyed spending hours in her perennial beds. Gladys was very fond of animals, and the house was never without a cat. She found enjoyment in sewing. She delighted in spending her summer vacations on Cliff Island, Maine. Gladys was a lady who definitely savored a good cup of coffee.
She is survived by her son, Robert J. Lawson, Jr. and wife, Jean Ostrowski Lawson of Oneonta and their daughters, Hannah Marie and Lydia Grace; her daughter, Patricia Lawson Ashe and husband, Charles Ashe of East Meredith; a nephew, Charles and wife, Patricia Lowe of Oneonta.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert on June 26, 2007 and her sister, Agnes "Bookie" Lowe.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2015 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
A graveside service will take place at a later date at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
