Obituary

Gladys G. Smith, long time resident of Schenevus and more recently a resident of West Davenport, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, with her family surrounding her, at Fox Hospital Nursing Home. She was 83.

Gladys was born August 6, 1926 in Schenevus. Her parents were John and Laura (Gurney) Grimes. She graduated from Andrew S. Draper Central at the age of 16 and from Oneonta State Teachers College (SUCO) in 1948.

Gladys taught 4th grade at Harpursville for a short time and then she married Lewis L. Smith on February 11, 1950 and had a family. After her children were in school she went back to teaching. She taught first/second grades from 1963-1983 in Schenevus Central.

Gladys was an active member of Schenevus First Baptist Church until moving to West Davenport in 2006, at which time she became a member of the West Davenport Free Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Melvin) Gage, sons, Lewis (Heidi) Smith, Jr. and Kevin (Harriet) Smith. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Craig (Amy) Gage, Richard Gage, Carrie Gage, Rebecca Gage, Brant (Linda) Smith, Brooke Smith and Michelle Smith and her great grandson, Tyler Gage. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Roseboom and her sisters-in-law, Frances Kristofik, Beatrice Laskaris, Mary (Larry) Weill, Irma Jean Grimes and Ruth Grimes, and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Lewis L. Smith on February 16, 2002 and her brothers, J. Leslie Grimes and George Grimes.

A Memorial Service will be held in the spring at the West Davenport Free Baptist Church.
