Obituary

ONEONTA - Gordon G. Ryther, 87, entered eternal life on Monday, August 18, 2008. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of C. Gordon and Gladys G. Ryther.

After graduating from Buffalo Technical High School, he earned his BS in Electrical Engineering at the University of Michigan in 1942, then served the next three years in the United States Army Air Corps in the South Pacific where he performed maintenance and training on the then-new technology of radar, serving as Radar Officer, Electronics Officer, Signal Supply Officer and Administrative Officer.

After World War II he left the Army as a Captain and returned to earn his MBA at the University of Michigan, where he met and married Mary Emma Splane, before moving to Buffalo, then Manhasset, NY to raise their family.

Gordon had a long and successful career in the manufacture of diamond abrasive products used primarily in the aircraft industry.

Gordon greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, playing tennis and golf, camping, and cheering for his favorite teams, the Michigan Wolverines and the Buffalo Bills. He was an avid student of Civil War history. He served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 97 in Manhasset, where he was a member of The Order of the Arrow. He was active in the Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer, Head Usher, teacher, and choir member, in churches in Great Neck, NY, North Canton, CT, Mendham, NJ, and most recently Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta, NY.

Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Mary. Survivors include his sister, Nancy E. Ryther of Buffalo NY; daughter, Mary Beth and son-in-law, Allen Laing of West Oneonta NY, son, Richard G. Ryther and daughter-in-law, Mary (Rogers) of Delmar NY, and Barbara S. Ryther of Belmont MA; grandchildren, Jeffrey S. Hiscox and Michael D. Hiscox of Oneonta NY, and Caitlin A. Ryther, Andrew R. Ryther, Rachel I. Ryther and Samuel P. Rogers of Delmar NY.

Private services for the immediate family will be held at a later date. ,
