Hazel J. Holmes
EAST WORCESTER - Hazel J. Holmes, 92, died peacefully on Friday, October 26, 2007 at the Masonic Care Community Center in Utica.
She was born June 21, 1915 in Franklin, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Mary Lillian (Hyatt) Blanton.
Hazel graduated from the Davenport Union School and than the State Normal School, Oneonta, Class of 1935.
She married H. Neil Holmes on June 21, 1936 in Maryland. He predeceased her January 28, 2007.
Mrs. Holmes was a teacher at the Stewart School House, a one room school in East Meredith. She then opened Hazel's Beauty Shop in her home in East Worcester for 15 years. In 1965, Mrs. Holmes went to work for the Otsego County Department of Social Services as an Adoption Placement Social Worker, retiring in 1974.
She was a member of the East Worcester United Methodist Church, East Worcester Fire Auxiliary, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 138, Schenevus, where she once served as District Deputy Grand Matron, and the Worcester Women's Bowling League.
Mrs. Holmes enjoyed baking (twice winning the Daily Star cooking contest), watching game shows, working on word puzzles and traveling, especially to their winter home in Florida.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne and Gloria Holmes of Norwich and Charles and Mary Ann Holmes of Worcester; granddaughters, Jennifer and Samuel Space of Providence, RI, Jessica and D.J. Waterman of Lake Winola, PA, Rebecca Holmes of Auburn Center, PA and Amanda Holmes of Greene; sisters-in-law, Myrna Loy and William Belak of Altamont; Ruth Holmes and John Brown of Morris, and Alice Blanton of East Meredith; a family friend, Arthur Verity, Jr. of Worcester; several cousins and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her sister, Roberta Frey and a brother, Herbert Blanton.
Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the East Worcester United Methodist Church, with an Order of the Eastern Star service starting at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service, with the Rev. Nancy Dulkis, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, Davenport Center.
