Obituary

ONEONTA – Helen Hathaway Grandsburry, 102, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Otsego Manor.

Helen was born July 19, 1907 in Oneonta, the daughter of Helen Ward and Lynn W. Hathaway, Esq. Helen's mother passed away in the Flu Epidemic in 1918. Helen and her siblings spent many summers in Gilbertsville with the Ward Family after their mother's death.

Helen was a graduate of Oneonta High School and completed a Home Nursing Training in Albany on January 19, 1926.

She moved to Utica where she spent her working life. She worked for many families in the Utica area, among them the Edward J. Trosset Family.

After her marriage to Ernest J. Grandsburry, Helen joined the Oneida County Sheriff's Department and served as a Jail Matron until her retirement in 1977, at the age of 70. After her retirement, Helen returned to Oneonta to live, until moving to the Meadows in 1999. She was among the first residents of the new Otsego Manor, where she was residing at the time of her passing.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest on April 29, 1963; her brother, Dr. L. Ward Hathaway, DVM; her sisters, Charlotte H. Card and Laura H. Gilchrist; three half brothers, John G., Robert J. and Walter J. Hathaway; and half sister, Ruth H. Glazer.

Helen is survived by her half sisters, Donna H. Robinson of Wells, ME and Marjorie J. Hathaway of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
