Obituary

Mt. Vision – Howard H. Michaels, 91, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.


He was born February 25, 1922 in Oneonta, the son of Herbert and Lula Mae (Becker) Michaels.


Howard graduated from Oneonta High School in 1940.


He was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II from 1942 to 1944.


He married Adah Briscoe on July 18, 1946 in Otego.


After spending his early years in Oneonta, where he was a member of the River Street Baptist Church, he moved his family to Mt. Vision and later spent his retirement winters in Apache Junction, AZ.


Howard was an employee of the D&H Railroad in Oneonta for the better part of his life from which he retired in 1982. He was a member of the Brotherhood Railroad Trainmen.


He was also known as a fine carpenter and continued the trade after his retirement. He was always happy to take on a carpentry project for family and friends. One of his favorite retirement enjoyments was the fruit picking he and his crew of retirees did for the poor in The Valley Sun, supplying the Apache Junction food bank and others with oranges, grapefruits and lemons, that the gracious people donated to them.


Howard was predeceased by his wife, Adah after 57 years of marriage; his son, Kirk William Michaels in 2005; and was the sole survivor of his and his wife's siblings.


He is survived by his children, Wayne and wife, Barb Michaels of Mt. Vision, Cathy and husband, Paul McCarthy of Latham, Jon and wife, Lori Michaels of Goodyear Lake, and "adopted" daughter, Ann (Taber) and husband, Ronnie Utter of Oneonta; grandchildren, Brenda Caruso, Brian Michaels, Carrie Bliss, Damien Kanser, Sara Michaels, Ryan McCarthy, Lauren McCarthy, Christopher Michaels, and Matthew Brennan; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Candice Caruso, Kayla Michaels, Samantha and Kailey Bliss; and several nieces and nephews.


A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.


There will be no calling hours.


The interment with military honors will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego at a later date.
