Oneonta – James J. Carter, 80, passed away May 17, 2019 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

He was born March 19, 1939 in Manhattan, NY, the son of James and Mary (Keaveney) Carter.

James married Verna Dingman in Yorktown Heights.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving in the National Guard with the 7 ^th Regiment.

James grew up in the Bronx.  He graduated from Mount Saint Michael's High School and went on to receive an Associate's degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology.  James worked as a sales representative for Halifax Cotton Mills for many years.  From 1989 to 2007, James was a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America.  He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Oneonta.

James is survived by his wife of 52 years, Verna Carter; their children, Cheryl (Jeffrey) Hyatt, Deborah (James) Herrmann, James (Beth) Carter and Michael Carter; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

The Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Fr. David Michiewicz, as celebrant.

Private interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
