ONEONTA – James Ford Van Deusen died at his home on Saturday, May 20, 2006.
He was born January 10, 1937 and was raised in Oneonta and attended Oneonta Public Schools. He graduated from College of the Holy Cross in 1959.
He began his insurance career in 1959 and founded Southern New York Claims Service, an independent adjusting firm, in Oneonta in 1962. With his wife, he operated this firm continuously until his death. He was a member of the National Association of Independent Adjusters and the New York State Association of Independent Adjusters. He held all offices in the New York Association and was its president 1993-1994.
He was a member of several local business organizations and civic boards including the Huntington Memorial Library and Wilber National Bank and Corporation. In addition, he belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
He was also a member of the Oneonta Sportmens' Club where he enjoyed shooting trap, working outside and the friendships he made.
He greatly enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Rome.
He married the former Marjorie S. Miller and shared both his personal and business life with her for 46 years until his death. She was his beloved companion and dearest friend for his adult life.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, James C., Derek R., Dennis L. and his wife, Anne. Also by a granddaughter, Karlyn and a grandson, Alexander James. His grandchildren brought much joy to his life. He was very proud of them. In addition, he is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Carter Harrison II of Oneonta and her family.
He was loved very much by his entire family and will be greatly missed.
There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.
