Janet A.
Humphreys
April 24, 1933 – August 27, 2021
Janet A. Humphreys, a long time Oneonta resident passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021.
She was born in Danville, PA on April 24, 1933 to Harold and Helen (Ayers) Arbuckle. She moved to Delhi as a young child and graduated from Delaware Academy in 1951 and from Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, Sayre, PA in 1954 as a registered nurse. She held nursing positions at the VA Hospital in Syracuse and at IBM in White Plains where she developed and implemented the health clinic.
She married Robert Humphreys of Endicott on August 23, 1958. After their marriage, they moved to Syracuse University where she helped him pursue his graduate degrees. While there, she was employed as a nurse at General Electric. After Syracuse, Janet and Bob lived in Brockport until he joined the faculty of Hartwick College. Bob died of a heart attack in January 1967. After Bob's death she worked many years at the Student Health Clinic at Hartwick College, doctor's offices. Planned Parenthood, and the SUNY Oneonta Family Health Center.
She felt that her greatest accomplishment was to provide unconditional love for her two sons to ensure that they had opportunities in life to find happiness and success. Many wonderful people helped: teachers, coaches, Scout leaders, friends and family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1964 and served the Fox Hospital Auxiliary for several years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Linda Buckley and her husband Ray, her brother-in-law Frank (Emily) Humphreys, and Carolyn (James) Bixby.
She is survived by her sons, Edward of Cincinnati, OH, his sons Evan (Laurie) of Cincinnati and Cameron of Denver, CO, their mother Tracey, as well as David (Barbara) Humphreys and their daughters Elisse and Sophie.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m., Friday, September 17, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Marti Swords-Horrell, officiating. Please wear a mask.
In lieu of flowers those who wish may contribute to the American Heart Association in memory of her husband and sister who suffered from heart disease, and thankfully her niece and nephew both of whom were recipients of heart transplants.
