ONEONTA – Janice L. "Denny" Lennox, 65, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born November 4, 1945 in Kutztown, PA, the daughter of John and Doris (Bray) Moyer.
She graduated from Fleetwood High School in Fleetwood, PA, in 1963. She then attended East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, PA, where she met and fell in love with her "hero", James (Jim) W. Lennox. She graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a Bachelors of Arts in Education in 1967.
Denny married Jim Lennox on August 12, 1967 in Virginville, PA.
While living in New Jersey and Connecticut, she taught at various elementary schools while furthering her education. She received a Masters of Arts in Education from the University of Connecticut and later taught at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Denny and Jim moved to Oneonta in 1976. After the birth of their daughter, Courtney, she spent time caring for her home and family. She later worked in Bresee's Department store in downtown Oneonta.
She continued her teaching career at St. Mary's Elementary School. She began teaching at Greater Plains Elementary School and continued to teach there for over 20 years until her retirement in 2007. She taught pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and was a reading/math intervention specialist during her tenure at Greater Plains.
She loved her family above all else. She was an avid supporter of Jim and Courtney's academic and athletic endeavors. She loved her home and always decorated it impeccably for each season. She treasured getting together with her "Greater Plains Gang" and traveling with them to New York City for Broadway shows or to the spa in Hershey, PA.
An animal lover, Denny was charitable to many conservation and wildlife societies. She particularly enjoyed watching the procession of creatures through her backyard and counting the myriad species of birds at her feeders. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and her daily walks with Jim.
Denny will be most remembered for her radiant countenance. She was a very happy person who loved life. With sparkling eyes, she was always laughing, always gentle and loving. Rod Stewart's "Forever Young" could have been written for her. Denny touched many lives and the world is a better place for her having graced it with her presence.
She is survived by husband, Jim Lennox of Oneonta, NY; her daughter, Courtney S. Lennox of West Orange, New Jersey; her mother, Doris I.M. Moyer of Fleetwood, PA; her sister and brother-in-law, Susan A. and David Nace of Fleetwood, PA and sister, Kimberly A. Moyer of Mohnton, PA. She is also survived by her nephews, Seth and Adam Nace, of Fleetwood, PA.
She was predeceased by her father, John Moyer.
At her request, there will be no formal services. There will be a private family gathering in the future.
