Jean
Seroka
October 5, 1942 – December 13, 2025
Jean (Wilson) Seroka of Otego, NY, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at home.
Jean was born in Nyack, NY on October 5, 1942, the only child of the late Edgar and Marion (Beasley) Wilson. In her words, she had an idyllic childhood in Nyack, along the Hudson River, describing herself as a "tomboy". She began piano lessons at the age of 7, until her high school graduation from Nyack High in 1960. As a child, she spent many summers as a camper at Pathfinder Lodge on Otsego Lake and later was a counsellor there. Jean was active in high school sports, playing field hockey, and she sang in the school chorus. She used her piano skills occasionally as an accompanist with the chorus. Because of her summers at Pathfinder, she decided to enroll at SUNY Oneonta, and earned her BS in elementary education. While at SUCO, Jean met Joe Seroka, and they were married between semesters in 1963. After graduation, the Serokas settled in Otego, where they raised three children, buying their forever home in 1967. In addition to teaching kindergarten in Otego, Jean also worked as a real estate broker, a proofreader for the local newspaper, an assistant manager of a Cash and Carry grocery store, and as a private tutor. She and Joe managed the Crystal Lake Campground for several summers, were active members of the Adirondack Mountain Club, and they both were long-time ushers at the Glimmerglass Opera. She was also active as a volunteer with the American Heart Association, and a member of the Catskill Choral Society. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family, and traveling.
In 2001 Jean and Joe purchased 9 acres of land along the Susquehanna River not far from their home. "Riverland" became a park and sanctuary, where they planted flowers and trees and built birdhouses to encourage wildlife. They spent many happy occasions there with family and friends.
Jean was predeceased by her parents and by her husband, Joe, and is survived by her sons, Jeffrey and Glenn, and by her daughter and son-in-law, Lee Anne and John Viscosi, grandchildren, Michael Seroka, Nicholas Viscosi, and Jade Seroka-Moore and her husband Greg Moore, parents of her great-grandchildren, Darren, Jack and Willow.
Since Jean donated her body to advance medical research, there are no calling hours or services. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date on Riverland.
Donations may be made in Jean's memory to one of the organizations dear to her heart, including the Adirondack Mountain Club, Susquehanna SPCA, Helios Care/Catskill Area Hospice, the American Heart Association, and the Glimmerglass Festival.
