ONEONTA – Johanna Goldsmith Koenig, died Monday, June 16, 2008 at her home.
Johanna and her husband, Charles came to Oneonta in 1950. She was active in the Oneonta community for the next 58 years, helping to establish the Oneonta Co-op Nursery School in 1952, the first day-care center in Oneonta, and member and past president of the Oneonta Chapter of the League of Women Voters.
Johanna and Charles were married at the age of eighteen and had 64 wonderful years of marriage.
After beginning a family, she returned to college and graduated from Hartwick College in 1960 and in 1962 earned a Master's in Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, specializing in Radiation Biology and Cell Physiology.
Johanna taught Biology at Oneonta High School for 7 years, was an adjunct professor at Hartwick College and then on to being a real estate broker and sharing ownership, with her husband, Charles, of the Century 21 real estate brokerage in Oneonta.
Johanna loved nature, and was a dedicated naturalist. In addition to being an avid hiker and cross country skier, she was a long time member and officer of the Adirondack Mountain Club. She both led and participated in numerous outings both in the United States and overseas, including England/Wales, Chile, Equador, and the Galapagos Islands.
She was an original founder of the Susquehanna Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club, and a co-founder of the Delaware/Otsego Chapter of the Audubon Society. Johanna was instrumental in the establishment and maintenance of hiking trials in the Oneonta area.
Always a student and teacher, her generosity in teaching others, communicating her enthusiasm for the natural world and her love of sharing her extensive knowledge inspired her family, friends and students to greater appreciations of nature and the world.
Walking with her through the woods and fields was always delightful, enlighting and educational.
Johanna is survived by her husband, O. Charles Koenig; sons, Thomas, Carl and wife, Patricia and Paul and wife, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Brant, Cara, Christopher, Dakota, Julius, John Paul, and Bryce; great-grandchild, Lauren; sister, Carla Rodio and husband, Francis; brother, Arthur Goldsmith; nieces, Susan Rodio, Edna Baxter and Estella Chojnicki.
Johanna is also survived by her many wonderful and devoted friends. The family extends a special thank you to Barbara Dauria who was a great comfort and aid to her.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
