John A. Gartung, Sr.
EAST WORCESTER – John Alden Gartung, Sr., passed on to eternal life the morning of June 2, 2007 at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown, after a heroic battle with cancer.
John was born April 7, 1945 in Bay Shore, the son of William and Mary (Donahue) Gartung.
John was a highly respected and trusted insurance agent for 30 years, primarily for Prudential Insurance Co. and Otsego County Patrons.
He was a man of deep faith, active at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Worcester as an Eucharistic minister and a lector. He also led a weekly prayer group for many years.
With several of his brothers and sisters, John owned and helped operate Willy's Farm and Cider Mill in Schenevus.
John had a profound and unconditional love for his family and was survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Christine; his children, John Jr. and wife, Anne; Christine Mary and husband, Patrick Sr.; Alicia and husband, Lawrence; Kurt and wife, Felicia; Diana and husband, John and his grandchildren, Miranda, Patrick Jr., Sean, Dominic, Gabriel, Mary Catherine, Nicholas, Sarah, Georgia, John Alden, William and baby Gartung. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Caroline Gartung and eleven brothers and sisters as well as many other beloved relations.
He was predeceased by his father, William.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at the E.J. Skinner Co Funeral Chapel in Worcester. A recitation of the Rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. and the Vigil Service will be at 7:45 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding, as celebrant.
Following mass there will be a reception in the parish hall. At John's request, there will be a time to share a memory or a story.
