West Oneonta - John A. Harrington, 84, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.
He was born January 6, 1925 in Mt. Vision, NY, the son of John A. and Clara (Card) Harrington Sr.
John married Marian Dunbar on May 12, 1944 in White Plains, NY. She predeceased him on August 14, 2009.
He was a lifelong area resident who served in the United States Army during WWII.
John and his wife, Marian, lived in West Oneonta from June 1948 until
August 2009. They owned and operated Harrington's Food Market in West
Oneonta for 15 years from 1950-1965. John became Postmaster of West
Oneonta in 1955 until he retired in 1986 after 31 years.
John served as chairman of the West Oneonta school board until the
consolidation with the Oneonta School District in the mid 1950's. He
also spearheaded a drive to form the West Oneonta Fire District, and
served as the first Fire Chief and President. He also organized and
chaired a committee which helped to stop the construction of a flood
control dam which would have flooded the valley, including the town of
West Oneonta.
He began his career as a pilot and flight instructor in 1962, and was
honored with the first Gold Seal Instructor certification in the USA.
John specialized in teaching instrument flight in the Oneonta and
Sebring, Florida area for 46 years, and also taught both basic and
instrument ground school for 25 years.
John is survived by his daughter, Debbie Shannon and her husband Jim of Bloomfield, NY; his son , John Harrington and his wife Harriett of Chattanooga, TN; 6 grandchildren, John, Marc, Patrick, Michael, Jessica and Benjamin; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta.
