October 28, 1933 – June 25, 2020
Oneonta – John R. Roman, 86, passed away June 25, 2020 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY.
John was born October 28, 1933 in Brooklyn, the son of John and Anna (Bursok) Roman. He spent his early life in Broad Channel and graduated from East New York Vocational High School.
He was a United State Navy veteran, serving from 1951 to 1955, where he was a pipe fitter stationed on the USS Mindoro.
John married Clare Goetke on January 18, 1953 at St. Virgilius Catholic Church in Broad Channel, NY. They made their home in Hillsdale, NY, then lived in Edenton, NC for a while before moving to Oneonta.
John worked as a plumber at Honeywell then owned and operated the John Roman Heating and Plumbing in Hillsdale.
He was a member of the Plumbers Union and the VFW.
John enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing and bowling. He sponsored a bowling league for many years. He also always enjoyed a good meal.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Clare Roman; a daughter, Laura and Ted Devlin; a son, Robert and Doreen Roman; 2 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert and Maureen Roman; an uncle, Clement Roman and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Johnny Roman and a brother, Richard Roman.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 1 p.m. on July 1, 2020 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. The Rev. David Mickiewicz will be officiating.
Due to the current restrictions, please be prepared to possibly wait to enter the building, also maintain social distancing and wear a face covering.
The committal service with military honors will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oneonta.
