GOODYEAR LAKE – John O. Stevens, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born May 27, 1918 in Oneonta, the son of Charles Franklin and Marion (Offord) Stevens.
John graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1935 and started working at the family business, Stevens Hardware Store in Oneonta. He then joined the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He became a POW when his plane was shot down in Switzerland. Returning from service, he continued working at the Stevens Hardware Store, where eventually became the proud owner, retiring 2 years ago.
John was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He was recognized by the Ruffled Grouse Society, Trout Unlimited and the Otsego County Conservation Alliance, for the support and stewardship in his contributions to the outdoor sports. He also enjoyed gardening and was proud of the outdoor space he created around his Goodyear Lake home.
He is survived by his children, Thomas C. and wife, Carleen Stevens of Oneonta, William J. and wife, Donna Stevens of Oneonta, and Francine and husband, Bob Bailey of Oneonta; grandchildren, Matthew T. Stevens, Jennifer M. Sauvola, Adam J. Mitchell, Sarah M. Buffun, Shawna M. Stevens, Leah R. Hernandez, Jarrett M. Benjamin, Robert Bailey and Patricia M. "Micki" Bailey; 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Jeanette Necrason and Patsy Baker; his former wife, Janet Chapman Stevens, the mother of his three children; his wife, Marilyn Foreman Stevens and companion, Lois Kilpatrick.
Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Henry Geerken, retired pastor of the West Davenport Free Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery.
