Obituary

ONEONTA – Julia Oster Kyker, 95.9 years old, passed away Friday, October 1, 2010 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.


She was born January 7, 1915 in Cohoes, NY, the daughter of Adam and Tekla (Lyzinska) Ostaszewski.


Julia moved to Oneonta at the age of 12 and became a member of St. James Episcopal Church where she was very engaged and involved in a variety of activities and held several church positions.


After high school she attended Oneonta Normal School. She worked as a police matron and was a waitress at Laskaris' and Diana's restaurants.


Julia married Harry Lee Kyker on June 4, 1940 in Duanesburg. At the age of 35, she enrolled at the State University College at Oneonta, where she earned her teaching degree. She began teaching for Sidney Central School District. Her full of life and positive attitude inspired many young students for 25 years, as well as friends and family. She continued her college education earning credits just shy of a Master's. Her sense of humor and honest ways has earned her much respect throughout her life. Her motto was "We don't get older, we get riper."


By retirement she had become a world traveler. She also was a volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and was involved in a numerous activities in Oneonta.


She is survived by her 3 daughters, Leah (Frederick) Michalson, Marshalee (Joseph) Stasky and Virginia Lee (David) Avery; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, a nephew, and a cousin.


She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harry on September 4, 1996 and her sister, Mary Stanton.


A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 4, 2010 at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta, with the Reverend Kenneth Hunter, officiating. Interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.


There will be no calling hours.
