Obituary

ONEONTA – Kathryn Elsie Lewis, 95, passed away August 31, 2011 at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home, United Methodist Homes, Johnson City, NY.

Elsie was born on The Feast of The Epiphany, January 6, 1916 in Johnson City, the daughter of Roy and Kathryn (Nicholson) Lewis.

She was a graduate of Scarritt College in Nashville, TN.

Elsie was the Director of Christian Education at several Methodist Churches, retiring from the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta and the Wyoming Conference of the United Methodist Church. In October of 1995, Elsie was the proud recipient of two Social Justice Awards, the Guy Leinthall Award from the Wyoming Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Ball Award from the Methodist Federation for Social Action. She was a strong advocate for peace and social justice and a committed teacher and educator.

Elsie is survived by her sister, Royna Lewis of Binghamton; a niece, Deborah Davis and a nephew, Delmar Brown, both of Alabama.

She was predeceased by her sister, Jeanette Brown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Teressa Sivers, pastor and the Rev. Gary Doupe, retired, officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

A private burial will take place at the Jermyn Cemetery in Jermyn, PA.
